Federal Immigration Sweeps: Guidance for Property Owners and Managers
BOMA International Policy Brief:
Guidance Concerning Interactions With Law Enforcement on Property
A message from Don Davis, Esq., Vice President of Advocacy & Building Codes, BOMA International:
As often happens in advocacy, significant issues can become elevated rapidly. This is the case with the current immigration enforcement actions that have been underway in several major U.S. cities. BOMA International is concerned as the buildings our members own, operate and manage are often the location of this enforcement activity. To assist in understanding the proper manner in which to respond, the Advocacy team developed the guidance document below in consultation with our attorneys.
The brief recommends a common-sense approach to engaging federal enforcement personnel. However, it is always a good idea to refer any specific incident to your firm’s legal counsel for appropriate actions. Every situation will be unique and potentially jarring; seeking the right advice in every occurrence will avoid issues later.
While Houston BOMA does not take any political or legal position on this issue, we are monitoring developments closely to stay informed and provide timely updates. Please check this article regularly, as it will be revised as more information becomes available.
This document is intended for general informational purposes and should not be considered legal advice. Properties are encouraged to consult with their legal counsel and obtain client-specific approval when determining how to implement any guidance provided. While Houston BOMA does not take any political or legal position on this matter, our goal is to ensure our members have access to practical resources to navigate these complex issues.
