Texas BOMA Advocacy Day set for Tuesday, July 25 in Austin
to Support Property Tax Reform
As you are all aware, the Texas legislature will convene in a special session on July 18. The legislature is limited to considering legislation that the Governor puts on the call for the special session. Accordingly, Governor Abbott has already named property tax reform as an item for consideration.
In mid-June, Texas BOMA met with Senator Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston), a friend of Texas BOMA and a staunch advocate for property tax reform. As you will recall, Senator Bettencourt authored SB 2 during the regular session, and continues to push for both property appraisal reform and more taxpayer input into property tax rates. Senator Bettencourt anticipates filing similar legislation for the special session, and believes the bill will be heard in the Senate Finance Committee the week of July 24.
This is a top priority for Texas BOMA. Many of our cities are now seeing significant increases in property tax appraisal valuations, and have seen significant increases above the effective tax rate year on year. The result of this increasing tax rate and increased valuations are higher taxes and litigation over appraisals, resulting in cost increases for our owners and our tenants. We need to work hard to help the legislature take up and pass this important legislation.
Texas BOMA will hold a board call on Friday, June 30, to discuss this important piece of legislation and work to ensure it is passed during the special session. In addition, a Texas BOMA Advocacy Day in Austin has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 25, to support property tax reform.
We hope you will join us for this important day of support! Mark your calendar and look for more details to come soon.
