Announcing Houston Hearing of the Senate Select Committee on
Property Tax Reform and Relief

Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at 10:00 a.m.
Houston Community College – West Loop Center Auditorium
5601 West Loop South, Houston, TX 77081
Parking lot and garage parking are available to the public.

Committee Members:
Sen. Paul Bettencourt, Chair, Sen. Brandon Creighton, Sen. Kelly Hancock, Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., Sen. Charles Perry, Sen. Van Taylor, and Sen. Carlos Uresti

The committee will be taking testimony about the governance, transparency and accountability of appraisal districts and appraisal review boards. Statewide, total city and county property tax levies over the last 10 years have generally risen more than twice as fast as median household incomes. When property values rise and tax rates stay the same, that is a tax increase. Taxpayers’ ability to pay must come into account as continuous years of tax bill increases threaten home and business ownership.

The committee will also be hearing testimony on how to improve the tax rate setting process in Texas and provide taxpayers more input when a city or county wants to raise tax revenue in excess of its ratification tax rate.
